Variation within a population is governed by meiosis through random lineups and crossovers. Certain variables are more favoured than the others, and these can be selected out artificially by humans. Artificial selection is used to attain certain desirable traits which benefit the population. An example of this is dairy cows and their milk. Artificial selection has been used to select out the traits which increase milk production, fertility and disease resistance. Selecting out these traits will generate a greater population of cows with finer traits suitable for producing milk. Therefore, cows outline how artificial selection is an effective way in producing organisms which will prosper in relation to their initial traits.

Meiosis is main factor which governs variation within a population through the means of random lineups and crossovers. Some more favorable variables can be artificially chosen by people in order to achieve the best characteristics for the population. For example, in the case of dairy cows and milk production, the process of artificial selection has facilitated an increase in milk production, fertility and disease resistance due to selection of the most desirable traits which in turn leads to a population of animals more suitable to produce a higher quotient of the product. In this way, its possible to see how cows epitomize the way in which a prosperous and productive population can be attained by using artificial selection.
