How would you define a science fiction thriller?

What are the main focuses on a science fiction thriller, what key events need to occur?

bit difficult – fiction is just a made up story, not fact – yet could be based on fact. so characters or event could be similar to those in a news story or something.
Science part is usually involving space, aliens, the unexplained, time travel, giant radiated ants / lizards, anything that is nerdy – maybe they use terms, or an idea which wouldnt actually work in the real world or cant be scientifically explained, so they make it up a bit.
Independence day is sci-fi, yet i wouldnt put “signs” in the same category.
E.T. would be science fiction, where as 6th sence wouldnt.
